stepwalls

My collection explores India's remarkable stepwells, or "baoris," which transformed utilitarian water sources into architectural marvels from the 7th to 19th centuries. More than just wells, these subterranean structures, often commissioned by women, were vital social hubs. They offered women a unique public space for socialising, finding solace, and escaping daily constraints, subtly challenging patriarchal norms. Each step and carving whispers tales of communal life and quiet female agency, a powerful testament to their enduring legacy.
